Weapon upgrading is also needlessly convoluted, with 16 different types of upgrade materials to find and make sense of, and almost every weapon type requiring different materials in order to upgrade them. Dark Souls addressed both these issues with the introduction of Estus Flasks and a simplification of the weapon upgrade system, and going back to how it used to be made me remember how much of an improvement Dark Souls was in those regards. Rediscover some of the most celebrated titles from previous generations of console gaming, from legendary horror experiences to classic cartoon platformers, rebuilt using modern hardware. Demon’s Souls is set in Boletaria, a kingdom consumed by a dark being called the Old One, following its release through the use of forbidden Soul Arts.
Together with the masters of the remaster Bluepoint Games, we have lovingly crafted this thrilling experience to bring it to stunning new life on PlayStation 5. She handles all things gaming whether it be news, reviews, events or silly features. Seen at outlets such as MTV UK, Kotaku and Trusted Reviews (obviously), you can often find them on social media rambling about games, anime, films or an obscure mixture of the three. I lost 25,000 souls in the Swamp of Sorrows and felt they were lost forever – but perseverance allowed me to march forward and claim them once again.
Demon’s Souls is published by Sony Computer Entertainment, Atlus and Bandai Namco (Asian, North American and European releases). Find release dates and scores for every major upcoming and recent video game release for all platforms, updated several times per week. Every review comes from a verified owner of this game or item and is evaluated by a team of moderators. Players can level up using collected souls via the Maiden in Black character in the Nexus.
Demon’s Souls is deeply tactical, preferring to pit you one-on-one against vicious and high-level enemies that can use the same tactics, weapons and magic as you rather than drowning you in a sea of lesser foes. Demon’s Souls is a brutal, bleak action combat RPG that pits your lone character against a universe full of violent demons. They range from former human soldiers to agile, double scimitar-wielding skeletons, pouncing flame-creatures, octopus-headed guards, embryonic plague-carrying monstrosities, even Death himself.
The game is referred to as a spiritual successor to FromSoftware’s King’s Field series. Players will encounter new items to help them along their way in this 2020 remaster. One notable new item type are Grains, which offer players resistances to specific damage types, allowing you to better prepare themselves against enemies abusing a certain element. Back in February 2022, Sony stated it aimed to launch over 10 new live service games over the coming years. A month later, then-Sony exec Jim Ryan said he believed live service games were a key part of gaming’s future, confident in PlayStation’s live service push. After the first harrowing hour of exploration in Demon’s Souls, you’re dumped into the Nexus and given five portals.

One is placed beside a gargantuan sword that rips the sky to pieces, another is defeated by interacting with the scenery after some survival-based puzzling, and another actually commits suicide if you defeat her lover. Even the grande finale is a wonderfully subversive anticlimax where you’ve valiantly fought for dozens of hours to face off against the demon god The Old One only to find a sad and pathetic creature inside in need of being put out of its misery. Like Shadow of the Colossus before it or The Last of Us after it, there’s a palpable sense of pathos and pity surrounding some of Demon’s Souls’ most corrupt denizens. Demon’s Souls is the best PS5 game you can play at launch, and I’m sure it will go down in history as one of the best launch titles of all time.
Notable Video Game Releases: New And Upcoming
FromSoftware’s brand of hard-edged action has properly made it into the mainstream – even if the Japanese developer is not directly involved here at all. That depends on who you ask, but there were times when I was begging for Bluepoint to take the wheel and make this game its own. Namely, there was a part of me that wondered what would happen if Bluepoint had remade Demon’s Souls as more of a Metroidvania-esque experience without the game’s hub world, or if the team had just added a couple of new enemies where you weren’t expecting them. Yes, Demon’s Souls is often as difficult as this series’ reputation would lead you to believe it is, but I’m struck by how balanced much of this game feels. A big part of the credit there has to go to the game’s character building and equipment systems.
Instead, Demon’s Souls, like Shadow of the Colossus before it, breaks down the visual language of a classic to achieve little in return. Because, ultimately, video game realism doesn’t even look like the real world. Sometimes, the clouds diffuse light and you can’t ever figure out where it’s coming from.
Sometimes overgrowth twists into bizarre patterns or dies too early. The evolving aesthetic of video game realism, instead of looking like reality, just ends up looking like other video games. If you jumped into the Soulslike genre with Bloodborne, Sekiro, or Nioh, you’re going to find the action in Demon’s Souls much slower than you’re used to. More of an emphasis is placed on deliberately studying your opponents and playing defensively until the perfect time for attack presents itself. While magic users and some melee builds will be able to play a bit more aggressively, Demon’s Souls just isn’t designed to support that more active style of combat that has defined modern Soulslike games. All of this, by the way, runs at a crisp 60fps when set to the game’s “performance” mode, which upscales a 1440p signal to something approaching 4K.
In ancient times, due to the misuse of magic known as the Soul Arts, Boletaria was attacked by a being called the Old One. The world was nearly consumed by the magical “Deep Fog” and the soul-eating demons it created. The Old One was eventually lulled to slumber, saving what remained of Boletaria, while some survivors became long-lived Monumentals to warn future generations. In the game’s present, Boletaria’s ruler King Allant restored the Soul Arts, awakening the Old One and its demon army. Boletaria is now being consumed by demons, with those humans without souls turning into insane monsters.
I want more navigational options that force us to fight tooth and nail before we find our first set of armour. Demon’s Souls Remake is a faithful reconstruction of the original game with subtle modern-day improvements. A genre-defining masterpiece, it’s one of those games that is not for everyone but should be tried by everyone. Running beautifully in 4k and smoothly at 60FPS, Boletaria will entice you to go further, explore deeper, and dare to die again. This pursuit of realism is an oddly modern invention, but one that’s come to dominate the medium. I first remember it around the release of the original Gears of War, on Xbox 360.

This aspect proved demanding for Miyazaki, partly because of his fear that Sony would ask the team to lower the difficulty in order to make the game more accessible. As if the game weren’t hard enough for newcomers, Demon’s Souls still makes you experiment with item pick-ups, equipment loadouts, and even starting-class choices in order to understand their differences. If you want to access spells more easily, or understand how the “tendency” system works, or figure out what’s going on when you switch between “human” and “soul” form, a meager series of tutorial pages in the menus won’t be as helpful as you might hope. The same goes for “invasions,” a system that connects online players when anyone takes on the higher-health “human” form and is challenged by other players wanting their own returns to human form. The only really notable thing about this system is that the game’s PS3 version shut down its online servers two years ago, so anyone who missed that interaction finally gets it back starting this week. Otherwise, it works as intended in terms of a brutal risk-and-reward system, for when you adopt human form and enjoy its higher HP limit.
